The Jetz:
The Jetz’, a Reston-based All-Star team, was founded by Jackie Phan in 2006. Through cheerleading, she wants this nonprofit program to promote self-esteem, self-reliance, determination and personal integrity. The Jetz program is in partnership with Reston Interfaith.
“Our goal is to work together as a team to build a strong program dedicated to serving youth in Northern Virginia,” said Phan. “We treat everyone with dignity and respect. By having activities that build confidence and self-esteem, we can target pressures with positive role models, provide education and recreational activities and arrange a safe and wholesome meeting environment.”
The Jetz, which feature girls ages 6 to 14, do not conduct tryouts. No one is turned away. The group also provides scholarships for girls in need. Last May, the Jetz won a national competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Annual Hoops for the Homeless event:
Reston Interfaith had a blast over the past two weekends, celebrating Freddie Mac’s Annual Hoops for the Homeless event. On September 7, RI hosted an energetic Pep Rally at the Southgate Community Center to get excited about the upcoming tournament at the Verizon Center on the 13th. Many community groups and individuals showed their support, including Wendell Byrd, John Coleman, the South Lakes High School Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, the Reston Youth Association Cheerleaders, the Jetz All Stars Cheer and Dance Team, and Scorpio Entertainment. Children and families had fun watching cheerleading performances, dancing to hip music, winning raffle prizes, and cheering on RI’s tournament team, comprised of our staff and clients. Robert E. Simon, founder of Reston, came to show his support for ending homelessness and to spend time with kids in the community.

Spring Spirit featured 50 of the best youth cheer and dance teams from the east coast.

Story About founder of Jetz All stars
Community coordinator has made a huge impact:
As members of the Stonegate Community Center in Reston, we are writing to show our deepest appreciation for our community coordinator, Jackie Phan.
Since her arrival nearly three years ago, we have seen an increase in community services, many of which we did not have previously. We very much appreciate the personal home and hospital visits from her when the residents are ill, as well as her conflict resolution counseling and emotional support — not to mention the various programs on employment, financial management, home buying and goal setting for the residents.
We have never seen the office so crowded since her arrival. Residents stop by to simply say hello and to bring her food. We consider her family.
Jackie has been a tremendous inspiration in our day-to-day lives. She is honest, responsible, respectful and compassionate, and a great leader and motivator. She often goes beyond the call of duty.
Recently her purse was stolen. When we and the other residents learned that the thief had thrown away her purse, we formed a search party searching the grounds and going through dumpsters looking for it. We felt that was the least we could do for someone we love.
In a society where people tend to concentrate on negativity, Jackie only sees the “good” in people. She has changed the lives of many at Stonegate and other communities. She often says, “If we pay attention to our thoughts and immerse ourselves in positive images and beliefs, we can transform ourselves, our communities, and the planet for the better.”
Along with other members of the Stonegate community, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Jackie for all that she has done. We would also like to thank Reston Interfaith and Quantum for their support and for bringing her to our community.
